In the early 19th century, communication between people was much more limited than it is today. There was no internet or social media, and telephones were a luxury that only a few could afford. The most common way to reach out to someone was by mail, which was delivered by hand or by horse-drawn carriage.

Writing and receiving letters was an important way to keep in touch with friends and family who lived far away, as well as to conduct business and stay informed about current events. Letters were often written in cursive handwriting on paper, and the content could range from news about the writer's life to discussions of politics, religion, and other topics.
